Dremon: From Albuquerque’s Wild West to the Industry’s Main Stage

Updated: Aug 20

Albuquerque, New Mexico, might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of hip-hop, but American rapper Dremon is changing that narrative. With his smooth verses and captivating hooks, Dremon is carving out a space in the industry, blending an oasis vibe with the grit of his roots.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Dremon’s musical lineage runs deep. Both sides of his family were musically inclined—his grandfather played guitar, piano, and sang, even catching the eye of Motown legends like Bo Diddley and Berry Gordy. Despite pressure to be a songwriter, Dremon’s grandfather insisted on performing his own songs, setting a precedent for artistic freedom that Dremon carries on today. This legacy, combined with watching his uncles chase their own musical dreams, lit a fire in Dremon, pushing him to exceed the limits of individual freedom with his music and style.

His journey began early. Growing up, he saw the contrasts between life in Albuquerque and other places he traveled, using these experiences to nurture his craft. At 17, his first taste of success came when he started traveling through the tristate area, soaking up the cultural differences and immersing himself in the birthplace of hip-hop. A pivotal moment came when Wu-Tang Clan’s Cappadonna gave him his first shot at spitting for a major celebrity—a moment that opened doors to countless opportunities.

By 2012, Dremon was already making waves with his "Great Escape" street LP, catching the attention of Jimmy Kang, CEO of Str8up Ent and VP of Wu-Tang Management. This led to three years of management under Kang, during which Dremon continued to build his name through performances and networking. His album "The Music" further solidified his presence, especially with crossovers into film, such as Money Is King, featuring Freeway Rick Ross and Jadakiss.

In 2018, Dremon’s career hit another milestone when he won the Swisher Artist Project Grant. This victory was the only one awarded from his state, and he used it to push his music further, leading to bigger shows and collaborations. One standout moment was his work with producer Mike Cee More on the track "Gravity," which later secured placements in a Canadian film, The Perfect Pickup, and in XXL’s 20th anniversary edition, where it was featured alongside a Lil Uzi Vert writeup. The single’s success also made Dremon the first hip-hop artist to be featured in ABQ The Magazine, and it became a local radio hit, leading to paid shows and a growing buzz.

As opportunities continued to arise, Dremon remained committed to his craft. He joined Mozzy on tour, and even though the COVID-19 pandemic paused his HBCU tour, it didn’t slow his momentum. Instead, it led to new connections, including a key collaboration with Rah Dolla. This partnership helped him secure significant placements, such as his track "Like What I Did," produced by Johnny Gusto, which was featured in the 2022 film *Boneyard*, starring 50 Cent and Mel Gibson. The following year, Dremon’s track "Shiftin," produced by Fontainn/Podium Muzik, was featured in NBA 2K24 and won Hip Hop Song of the Year at the New Mexico Hip Hop Awards. Despite the challenges, Dremon’s journey is a testament to how dedication and resilience can turn setbacks into stepping stones, propelling him to even greater heights.

Currently, Dremon is focused on building a solid team to land more sync and placement deals while promoting his latest record, "Shiftin." At the same time, he’s preparing for a New York media tour kicking off on Labor Day weekend. Dremon’s music, which he describes as a smooth oasis that fits in anywhere, continues to put Albuquerque on the map. With his determination and drive, Dremon is on track to become a significant figure—not just for his hometown, but in the industry as a whole.

The future is bright for Dremon, as he aims to take his artistry to new heights. With a track record of consistent growth and a drive to push past any limits, Dremon’s journey is one to watch closely. Whether through new music, media tours, or sync deals, Dremon is setting the stage for what’s next—and it’s sure to be big.
